About

 Introduction:

The Matla-Urja Energy Conference, hosted by Wits Business School in partnership with the Consulate-General of India, Johannesburg, will convene energy professionals, industry experts, academics, and thought leaders for robust engagement on emerging global trends that are shaping the future of energy in both South Africa and India. “Matla” means energy or power in Sesotho, and “Urja” means energy in Hindi, signifying the joining of forces between the two nations.

Context:

A just energy transition in South Africa means a transition to a low-carbon economy while addressing both socio-economic and environmental (climate change) issues. This requires serious work to be executed in the South African energy sector to make it more sustainable and future ready, which will benefit all South Africans by driving economic growth, creating jobs, and ensuring future security of supply. Although much progress has been made towards a just energy transition, India faces many challenges in its transition to a clean energy future. These include financing the transition, a lack of a stable policy framework, a lack of a robust renewable manufacturing industry, and social and environmental concerns arising from rapid renewable energy growth.

Under the theme “Energy Synergies”, the Conference will provide a platform for robust engagement on shared experiences and challenges in the context of a just energy transition, the future energy mix and infrastructural developments, energy financing, as well as mutual investment opportunities.
