Academic Quality Assurance
The Academic Quality Assurance office (known as “AQuA”) was established in 2021 in order to implement quality assurance and enhancement for all academic functions at WBS. Our aim is to ensure academic excellence that is recognised by the University, local and international accreditation bodies and agencies, as well as students and staff.
To support our aim, the AQuA team is involved in many different activities, including:
This involves implementing and managing routine quality assurance mechanisms to enhance the quality of learning programmes, including formal programme and course reviews, quality checks on teaching and learning (T&L) material, assessment oversight and annual reporting. We also facilitate the University’s five yearly “quinquennial review” (QQR) and oversee student satisfaction surveys.
AQuA assists academic staff with the process of approval for academic developments through the various Wits and national structures. This includes full academic programmes leading to qualifications registered on the national qualifications framework (NQF) as well as short courses offered through our Executive Education division. This involves both changes to existing programmes and the design and approval of new programmes.
One of our main functions is to support the school in securing and maintaining accreditation from international accreditation agencies, namely the Association of African Business Schools (AABS); the Association of MBAs (AMBA); the Association to Advance the Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB); and EQUIS accreditation from the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD). This includes implementing the requisite best practices for accreditation, such as an Assurance of Learning (AoL) system.
