Public Lecture: The Student Fees Crisis in Britain

Almost exactly a year ago, campuses around the country erupted in violent clashes not seen since the 1980s with students calling for free higher education. And while government agreed to provide financial relief for the so-called ‘missing middle’, the funding crisis is far from over.

The student fee conundrum is not isolated to South Africa, however. In Britain, the average student debt is £60,000 (over R1 million) and with nearly half of graduates never repaying their debt, Britain’s student finance system is in crisis.

WBS is pleased to invite you to a public lecture with Lord Peter Hain, Visiting Professor at WBS, at which he will discuss the student fee crisis in Britain and possible solutions to a universal problem.

Peter Hain, author, politician and activist, served in the governments of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown for twelve years. As Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, he negotiated an end to the conflict, and was a staunch anti-apartheid leader. Lord Hain is now in the House of Lords. Lord Hain will also be running two workshops at WBS. Click here for details of workshops by Lord Peter Hain.
