The recent spike in fuel prices has caused much consternation and distress. So much so, that the president has set up a committee of ministers to look into the issue. Some media have called it a “fuel price emergency” and pundits have all sorts of ‘solutions’, including deregulation.

Is deregulation really a solution? In the past, organised business was outspoken in its view that deregulation would yield more efficient results. It is also official government policy, but has not been implemented yet. Is regulation working? Or, are too many people making money out of regulation at the expense of motorists? For hard-pressed consumers the most important question is, what impact would deregulation have on the petrol price?
