Panel Discussion: Is Nuclear the Answer?
Nuclear power stations require significant long-term investment. Electricity demand, however, is flat – or even declining, which poses a risk for investors. Added to this is the fact that there are a number of new, low-cost innovations emerging in electricity markets which pose further risks to investments with long pay-back periods.
Wits Business School is pleased to invite you to a panel discussion, facilitated by Dr Rod Crompton, Director of the Energy Leadership Centre (ELC) at WBS, which will tackle these questions:
- Will the private sector invest in nuclear? Would (or could) government give the necessary guarantees?
- Health and safety risks are of considerable public concern especially after Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, Fukushima and others. Can the public be reassured about these concerns?
- After a 50 to 70 year useful life nuclear waste needs thousands of years of care and maintenance. Who will pay for this and how are the costs to be shared across generations?
- What should Government policy on the energy mix be? Is nuclear prudent or necessary?
Our panellists:
- Mr. Phumzile Tshelane, CEO, South African Nuclear Energy Corporation SOC Limited
- Prof. Kalu Ojah, Director of the Master in Finance & Investment, Wits Business School
- Mr. Mbulelo Ncetezo, Executive Manager Electricity, NERSA
- Dr Wolsley Barnard, Independent Energy Expert
