The strong political and economic ties between South Africa and China have greatly intensified in recent years, and not without controversy. China is South Africa, and Africa’s largest export, trade and development partner.  The rapid industrialisation of China has accelerated growth in many African countries, particularly those rich in natural resources. 

With the growing presence of China on the African continent, important questions need to be asked about the long-term prospects for all nations involved. What is needed to ensure long-term wealth-creation and a mutually beneficial collaboration between China, South Africa and Africa?  How do “mere supplierships’ and collaborative partner relationships compare, and which model is preferable for long term industrialisation and sustainable socio-economic development?  What strategic role should South Africa and China be playing in the entire continent  industrialisation? What opportunities are there for South Africa?
