The ‘Intermarium’, a plan pursued by Poland after World War I for a federation of Central and Eastern European countries, never materialised. But now the region is a major step closer to achieving a ‘geopolitical’ alliance, backed by the US. The ‘Three Seas Initiative’ which held its first summit in 2016, was formed to contain any Russian threat. The bloc, a triangular area stretching between the Baltic, Black and Adriatic Seas, also challenges one of Europe’s defining institutions, NATO, as well as the EU.
