The Economic and Geopolitical aspects of the Three Seas Initiative in Central Europe

The ‘Intermarium’, a plan pursued by Poland after World War I for a federation of Central and Eastern European countries, never materialised. But now the region is a major step closer to achieving a ‘geopolitical’ alliance, backed by the US. The ‘Three Seas Initiative’ which held its first summit in 2016, was formed to contain any Russian threat. The bloc, a triangular area stretching between the Baltic, Black and Adriatic Seas, also challenges one of Europe’s defining institutions, NATO, as well as the EU.

As part of our international faculty exchange programme, Wits Business School invites you to a fascinating look at recent developments in Eastern and Central Europe, and alliances with the US and China. Please join us as Professor Ireneusz Dąbrowski from Warsaw University discusses:

  • The economic potential of Central Europe (the Intermarium)
  • The ‘geostrategy’ of the US and Three Seas Initiative
  • The 16+1 co-operation: China and Central and Eastern European Countries (CEEC)
