Lord Peter Hain, visiting professor at Wits Business School, British politician, author and activist, has been something of a thorn in the side of certain global institutions lately. Passionate about South Africa, the country of his youth, and outraged at the systematic looting of state coffers to benefit a “corrupt, crony, monopoly elite”, Hain has fearlessly brought the issue of money laundering and corruption in South Africa to the attention of the British parliament.

The tide is turning in South Africa with a new, invigorated focus on rooting out this corruption. We believe it is crucial to start to have discussions on exactly how certain South African politicians, as well as companies headquartered here and around the world, have aided and abetted money laundering, corruption and state capture in South Africa, as Lord Hain says “in total betrayal of Nelson Mandela’s legacy”, and what needs to be done to repair the damage.
