Panel Discussion: Money Laundering, State Capture and the Role of UK Institutions

Lord Peter Hain, visiting professor at Wits Business School, British politician, author and activist, has been something of a thorn in the side of certain global institutions lately. Passionate about South Africa, the country of his youth, and outraged at the systematic looting of state coffers to benefit a “corrupt, crony, monopoly elite”, Hain has fearlessly brought the issue of money laundering and corruption in South Africa to the attention of the British parliament.

The tide is turning in South Africa with a new, invigorated focus on rooting out this corruption. We believe it is crucial to start to have discussions on exactly how certain South African politicians, as well as companies headquartered here and around the world, have aided and abetted money laundering, corruption and state capture in South Africa, as Lord Hain says “in total betrayal of Nelson Mandela’s legacy”, and what needs to be done to repair the damage.

Speakers on the panel include:

  • Mr Pravin Gordhan, MP and former finance minister
  • MavusoMsimang, Chairperson of Corruption Watch and ANC stalwart
  • Ismail Momoniat, deputy director-general, Treasury
  • Sarah-Jane Trent, Forensics for Justice
  • Professor Kalu Ojah, Wits Business School
  • Tara O’Connor, Africa Risk Consulting

Facilitated by Lord Peter Hain

Don’t miss this opportunity to dissect the mechanics of money laundering, its impact on our fragile economy and what South Africa can and should do to recover the money. The panel will also be presenting an action plan as drafted by all stakeholders on the panel in order to resolve past transgressions and tackle the problem going forward. The audience will have an opportunity to give input into the action programme.

We look forward to welcoming you!
