The South African economy was built on its mining industry which, in the early 1980s, was the country’s second largest industry, accounting for 21% of the GDP at the time. Fast-forward to 2021 when South Africa was ranked as one of the world’s 10 least attractive mining destinations.

Government recognises that minerals are key to economic recovery and growth in South Africa, but there are many factors impeding a turnaround of this vital industry. What is the future of mining in South Africa? What will it take for the country to regain its former glory as a mining powerhouse?

We are pleased to invite you to our next WBS Leadership Dialogue with our guest Natascha Viljoen, CEO of Anglo American Platinum. Natascha is a metallurgical engineer and holds an MBA (cum laude) from UCT. In 2020 and 2021 she was ranked among the top 50 in Forbes magazine’s Most Powerful Women International list. She was included on the list of 100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining in 2020. Click here for speaker bio
