The South African economy was built on its mining industry which, in the early 1980s, was the country’s second largest industry, accounting for 21% of the GDP at the time. Fast-forward to 2021 when South Africa was ranked as one of the world’s 10 least attractive mining destinations.
Government recognises that minerals are key to economic recovery and growth in South Africa, but there are many factors impeding a turnaround of this vital industry. What is the future of mining in South Africa? What will it take for the country to regain its former glory as a mining powerhouse?
