PhD

The Wits Business School (WBS) PhD programme is aimed at graduate students with a Masters degree who wish to develop their knowledge and understanding in a particular management- related field. The PhD is awarded on the basis of a thesis that constitutes a substantial contribution to the advancement of knowledge in the subject chosen. As such, the degree demands the capacity to pursue independent research and analysis at the highest level.

Why would you want to do a PhD?

Having a PhD shows the world you are capable of putting in the disciplined effort, logical thought and leaps of insight required of people who will go on to innovate and lead innovators. A PhD tells employers that you are capable of spending weeks or months diligently working to discover new truths, evaluating alternative approaches and recommending ways forward based on intellectually solid evidence.

Programme Structure

Year One:

  • Register for the PhD programme
  • Attend methodology and proposal writing seminars, complete your PhD proposal

Subsequent Years:

  • Proceed under the guidance of your supervisor with research, analysis and writing
  • Present your PhD proposal to a faculty committee
  • Annual PhD student workshop and presentation of your work
  • Six-monthly joint evaluation of progress by you and your supervisor
  • Examination
  • Graduation

Admission Requirements

Admission into the programme requires the following:

  • A good Bachelor’s degree with Honours (1st or upper 2nd class)
  • A Masters degree (1st or upper 2nd class)
  • An outline of your proposed research.
  • Availability of a suitable supervisor
  • Additionally, successful completion of this degree requires single-minded dedication and devoting considerable time to this major academic project
