Post Graduate Diploma in Management - PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

1. A one-year full-time programme in the field of Business Administration for graduates who wish to follow a career in management. This course takes a generalised approach ensuring that students have an in-depth knowledge of all the functional areas of management.

2. A one-year full-time programme in the field of Human Resources for those who wish to follow careers in human resource management, industrial relations or training and development. Students are also introduced to all the functional areas of management.

3. A two-year part-time programme in the field of Business Administration is offered to graduates who are currently employed in a full-time capacity but realise the value of in-depth management education to enhance their career prospects. The average age of the class is 27 years with class members being employed in a wide range of job functions.

Classes run from late January until the end of November. Lectures and syndicate work are held from 08:00 to 17:00 every week day. In each of the three terms approximately five subjects are taught and examined. Every full-time student is required to complete a two-month internship in a business organisation in full-time employment for the months of July and August to gain practical business skills. The average age of the class is 22 years and the majority have little full-time work experience.

PROGRESS ASSESSMENT
Progress during the PDM is monitored through the assessment of individual and syndicate assignments and by means of formal examinations at the end of each block. Class tests are written from time to time and participation by students, in interactive classroom sessions, may be rated.

Admission Requirements
Applications from persons who have obtained a degree in any faculty from a recognised university or institution will be considered. Non-graduates with a professional qualification, extensive work experience and/or proven leadership qualifications in their particular field of endeavour may also apply. However, admission on these grounds is very limited.

Business Experience
It is an advantage, but not a requirement, for a student to have had working experience in a relevant field of employment Students with experience are able to relate the academic perspective to their experience and become more actively involved in class discussion and project work.
It is essential that before applying for the postgraduate programme in human resources, applicants familiarise themselves with the duties of a human resource manager by discussing the job and its contents with at least two practising personnel professionals.

Admission Testing

WITS BUSINESS SCHOOL (WBS) and SCHOOL OF PUBLIC & DEVELOPMENT MANAGEMENT (P&DM)

Applicants are requested to read the following information with care, and to clarify with Kathy Cannell, any points that are not fully understood: tel. (011) 717-3130 (E-mail: Kathy.Cannell@wits.ac.za). Tests are used in the selection process because research shows a correlation between success in the tests and on the programmes. However, the test results form only a part of the criterion for candidate selection.

Click here for Testing Dates for 2010. Admissions tests form part of the application and should be written before the closing date for the particular programme, although they may be written either before or after an application is made.

Advance booking and payment at Computicket is necessary for all test sessions at the Wits Graduate Schools of Management. Candidates should buy a ticket for their preferred date and session time, noting that (a) space for each test session is limited so early booking is advisable, and (b) no refunds are possible. Computicket outlets are open from 09h00 to 17h00 Monday to Saturday, and 09h00 to 13h00 Sunday. Internet bookings are facilitated via Computicket.com, telephonic credit card bookings on (011) 340-8000. For other options telephone Computicket direct on +27113407200. Note that any additional costs (bank charges, etc.) are to the candidate¡¦s account. In all cases documentary proof of bookings is needed at WBS on the test date. There is no box office or ticket dispenser at WBS.

Test times: Weekday tests start at 08h30 and Saturdays at 09h00. Candidates should arrive 20 minutes early. A test administrator meets applicants at the Samuel¡¦s Area at WBS at these times, and escorts them to the test venue. Regrettably, late arrivals and those without a valid ticket will not be admitted for testing.

Testing Venue: Applicants for programmes at WBS and P&DM report at the Samuel¡¦s Area, Graduate School of Business Administration (WBS), Albert Wessels Building, 2 St David Place, Cnr St Andrew Road, Parktown. Admissions tests for the Wits Management Schools are administered in Cape Town by Mrs F Ross, tel. +27 21 5521193 / +27824034498". Dates and fees for testing off Wits campus are by arrangement and should be made direct (not through Computicket).

Test Fee: The testing fee for masters programmes (MM P& DM only) on the published dates is R720 and R280 for diploma programme (PDM). Please make sure that you book under the right programme. Test fees are non refundable. Applicants are advised that refunds are not payable on admissions test tickets, whether used or not, in any circumstances.

Test Results: Test performance feedback is posted to applicants, and detailed results are passed direct to Faculty Office. If posted feedback is not received after two weeks from the test date, a duplicate may be requested. Under no circumstances are results released over the telephone. Admissions test results are valid for two years. Tests may not be rewritten within six months.

Duration: Diploma applicants write three psychometric tests and a brief motivation/career plan, totalling up to four hours including administration and a tea break. Masters applicants write an additional test of ¡Ó50 minutes. Applicants are advised against scheduling appointments immediately after testing in case this affects their concentration or they are tired after testing.

Preparation: The tests measure abilities in the areas of general, arithmetic and cognitive reasoning, reading comprehension and written English. Unlike the GMAT test, they are aptitude tests, and require no preparation. Applicants may wish to remind themselves of basic arithmetic operations (times tables; addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).

What to bring: A ticket valid for the relevant test session, a ballpoint pen, an application number (if you have already applied) and ID document. No dictionaries, tables, calculators, etc. may be used.

The GMAT: PDM and MM P&DM candidates are required to take the schools' tests, but for MBA and overseas candidates GMAT information is available from the Educational Testing Service, Princeton, NJ, USA; e-mail address GMAT@ets.org, or www.MBA.com
