ADMISSIONS TESTING 2012

Applicants are requested to read the following information with care, and to clarify with the Admissions Testing Manager, Kathy Cannell, any points that are not fully understood:
e-mail: kathy.cannell@wits.ac.za or tel. 011 717-3130. Tests are used in the selection process because research shows a correlation between success in the tests and on the programmes. However, the test results form only a part of the criterion for candidate selection.Admissions tests form part of the application and should be written before the closing date for the particular programme, although they may be written either before or after an application is made.

GMAT Quantitative Preparation Course

Wits Business School will be a hosting a GMAT Quantitative Preparation Course for prospective MBA students who have to sit for the GMAT. The course will run from Tuesday, 5 June 2012 until Tuesday, 31 July 2012 and will be presented on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 18h00 – 21h00. The cost of the course is R3 500 payable before attendance and includes all course material. The GMAT textbook is not included.


The course facilitator, Mr Shimon Goldchmit, holds a BSc in Chemical Engineering. Mr Goldchmit graduated from the Polytechnic School of the University of S.Paulo (USP), Brazil and associated himself with Prof Julio Caro. The course is adapted from Prof Caro’s GMAT Maths Preparation Course. Prof Caro has more than 25 years of a successful recorded history of top scores. Mr Goldchmit has taught various students in Brazil, USA and South Africa and equipped with his mathematical mind and a patient, perceptive and dedicated nature, he is eager to help MBA candidates obtain top scores on the GMAT regardless of their background knowledge.

Bookings, Test Fee and Payment:
Candidates should email Kathy Cannell to confirm attendance for their preferred date, noting that (a) space for each test session is limited so early booking is advisable, and (b) no refunds are possible. Payment can be made on day of testing (applicants are requested to bring the exact amount) or in advance.The banking details are as follows: FNB, Wits Business School, Current Account, Account number: 62150130690, Branch Code: 255005, Reference: 12306. In all cases, documentary proof of payment is needed at WBS on the test date. The testing fee on the published dates is R340 for diploma programmes (PDM) and R810 for Master’s programmes. Test fees are non-refundable.

Test times: Tests start at 09h00. Candidates should arrive 20 minutes early. A test administrator meets applicants at the Samuel’s Area at WBS at these times, and escorts them to the test venue. Regrettably, late arrivals will not be admitted for testing.

Testing Venue: Applicants report at the Samuel’s Area, Graduate School of Business Administration (WBS), Albert Wessels Building, 2 St David Place, cnr St Andrew Road, Parktown.

Test Results: Test performance feedback is posted to applicants, and detailed results are passed direct to Faculty Office. If posted feedback is not received after two weeks from the test date, a duplicate may be requested. Under no circumstances are results released over the telephone. Admissions test results are valid for two years. Tests may not be rewritten within six months.

Duration: Diploma applicants write three psychometric tests and a brief motivation/career plan, totalling up to four hours including administration and a tea break. Masters applicants write an additional test of ±50 minutes. Applicants are advised against scheduling appointments immediately after testing in case this affects their concentration or they are tired after testing.

Preparation: The test measures abilities in the areas of general, arithmetic and cognitive reasoning, reading comprehension and written English. Unlike the GMAT test, they are aptitude tests, and require no preparation. Applicants may wish to remind themselves of basic arithmetic operations (times tables; addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).

What to bring: Test Fee (the exact amount) or proof of payment valid for the relevant test session, a ballpoint pen and ID document. No dictionaries, tables, calculators, etc. may be used.
