Course Objectives

The Management Advancement Programme is an NQF level 7 post-graduate/ post-experience general management certificate programme designed to assist managers whose experience and prime activities have been in one or other functional area. The objective is to give managers a broad exposure to the fundamental nature and processes of management and human behaviour within organisations.

Specific Objectives

  • To broaden the perspective of participants whose previous experience has mainly been in a specialist area;
  • To provide managers with knowledge, skills and techniques that will lead to more professional management;
  • To develop the ability to make sound and informed decisions;
  • To increase effectiveness in working with people of different cultures and values;
  • To increase awareness of the economic, political and social factors which affect business management in South Africa and the world.

Who Should Attend?

Managers currently employed in managing a functional (specialized function) such as Marketing, Finance, or Human Resources Management, in commerce, industry or service organizations; working to prepare for transition to a more generalized managerial function where they are expected to look at business holistically. Typically, applicants will have at least FIVE years’ work experience, preferably in a management-related function, or recently promoted to management, or tipped for promotion and be at least 25 years of age. Applicants should also have a Matric or Senior Certificate, in addition to the required experience. Post Matric studies will be an added advantage. Those selected should demonstrate commitment to self-development and a desire for improving their organization’s performance. Typically, the profile of MAP students ranges from Directors to Middle Managers and CEOs, as well as other senior executives. The programme is also open to those within industry struggling to make a transition into the world of business from specialized areas or functions such as entrepreneurs, as well as those in the medical profession including medical doctors.

MAP Programme Structure

The programme has a modular structure consisting of six principle courses. The course commences with a compulsory two-day full-time Group Dynamics module. Thereafter, students begin the programme itself, completing two modules each consisting of nine sessions of two and half-hours at a time – in sequence. Part-time students have the opportunity to choose between attending lectures two evenings a week, or on Saturday mornings.

The programme is also available in a block release format for those students coming from outside South Africa or from other provinces outside the Gauteng Province. There are two versions of a block release format, the block release which consists of six days of full-time attendance in a month, and the weekend block release where students are only expected to attend three full days in a month, starting from Thursday to Saturday.
