International Programmes

Positioned in cosmopolitan Johannesburg, the commercial hub of the Africa, Wits Business School is able to offer its students, as well as visiting students and faculty, access to thought leadership and management expertise that is deeply relevant to both Africa and the international world of business. The International Programme's Office of the WBS is headed up by Professor Gillian Marcelle (Gillian Marcelle@wits.ac.za). whilst Karen Trent, the Exchange Co ordinator(karen.trent@wits.ac.za ) co- ordinates both incoming and outbound student exchange.

The Wits Business School MBA has the most extensive student exchange programme in Africa facilitated through a network of over fifty of the world's top business school in the prestigious PIM network (Programme in International Management) www.pimnetwork.org, as well as reciprocal exchange agreements with a further ten.

Wits Business School is the only business school in Africa to have been admitted to PIM, for which a business school has to prove that it has the same quality and reputation as that of the international partner universities.

Student and faculty exchange is performed on a reciprocal exchange agreement and in the case of student exchange; students pay no tuition fees to the international partner school. This presents a real benefit for South African students, for whom study abroad would ordinarily be too costly.

For inbound students and faculty, the Business School offers exceptionally well appointed, safe accommodation across a range of requirements, ranging from comfortable single rooms with a shared bathroom and common room arrangement in a newly renovated facility (U-House); to one and two bedroom apartments in an extremely comfortable renovated heritage building (Tremarton Place). Both residences are located on campus and have a well equipped kitchen, lounge with TV and easy access to a swimming pool, squash and tennis courts and barbeque facilities. Both campus and residence are but a few minutes drive away from most of the city's malls, entertainment and outdoor venues.

In addition to its extensive faculty and student exchange, the WBS International Programmes office welcomes enquiries about international academic programmes, ranging from guest lectures, academic programmes incorporating short term lectures and networking engagements to extensive academic and cultural immersion programmes.

For international visitors, Johannesburg's central location allows for an enriching study and cultural experience. Most of the world's leading international organisational are headquartered here, whilst many of the country's major attractions are easily accessible. One of the world's preeminent anthropological sites, the Cradle of Humankind, which contains evidence of early hominid finds, is but a thirty minute drive from Johannesburg, located on the road to Sun City and the malaria free Pilansberg Game Park. The Kruger National Park is a comfortable four hour drive. KwaZulu Natal's magnificent Drakensberg area is four hour's drive and Durban, another two hours. Students do not leave the country without a visit to Cape Town (2 hour flight) and the Garden Route, a nature drive of unrivalled beauty

An important educational component (and major highlight) in the WBS MBA is the International Business Elective. Each year, a group of students travel internationally in order to gain exposure to leading companies, as well as to develop an appreciation of their economies. This year, our MBA classes will visit China. In December 2009, students visited Brazil and Argentina; previously visits were undertaken to South East Asia (2008), India and Dubai (2007) and in 2006 students travelled to Hong Kong and China. Gerda Whiteman (gerda.whiteman@wits.ac.za) co-ordinates all international outbound tours.
